Ad Networks to Use With Google AdSense

For many websites that are monetized at least partially via display advertising, Google’s AdSense is often the primary solution used. AdSense is so popular because it’s generally the best option out there for bloggers and publishers; it offers the deepest roster of advertisers, first-class technology, and usually RPMs that beat any other network. If AdSense has a meaningful drawback, it’s that it can be limited in certain aspects. From the types of ad units offered to the number of ads that can be used on any one page, many users will wish that there was more they could do with AdSense.
A number of sites have written lengthy reviews about ad networks that can be used in place of AdSense, summaries that are useful primarily for those who have been banned from the program or who (often mistakenly) think they can do better with an alternative. But the better way to think of the other ad networks out there is as a complement to AdSense, capable of functioning in conjunction in order to maximize earnings from a variety of different ad implementations. Contrary to what many believe, ad networks are not mutually exclusive; it’s very possible that the optimal layout for monetizing your existing traffic involves a combination of different networks.

1. Yahoo! / Bing Contextual Ad Network

What It Is: Media.net is a contextual ad network run by a partnership between Yahoo! and Bing, two of Google’s biggest competitors. It functions in generally the same way as AdSense, and offers many of the same options. This ad network provides standard ad sizes (e.g., 728×90, 300×250, etc.) as well as contextual link units that direct to “landing pages” of targeted ads.

 How to Use With AdSense: Media.net can be a great option when you have a site that can accommodate more standard ad units than AdSense will allow. For example, a site with two 728×90 leaderboards and two 300×250 rectangles could use AdSense to fill three of the placements and Media.net to fill out the remaining one (or, ideally, experiment to find the best mix between the two networks).

 2. Infolinks
What It Is: Infolinks is a provider of so called “smart ads,” with their most common solution involving the display of ads when users hover their mouse over linked content. Infolinks also offers “skinned” ads that fit in the empty space to the right and left of a site’s content, as well as text links that can be inserted within content.
How to Use With AdSense: Many sites utilize Infolinks (or competing offerings) right along AdSense. Whereas AdSense monetizes the real estate on your site specifically dedicated to display advertising, Infolinks is designed to make money by transforming the text on your site into ad units.

3. Outbrain

What It Is: Outbrain is an ad network that generally has publishers on both sides of the payment equation. They’re responsible for many of the “sponsored content” sections around the web, in which publishers pay to have links to their content featured on other sites. When these links are clicked, the referring site earns some revenue while the destination site gets a new visitor.
Outbrain ads are generally pretty far down on the page, and as such won’t earn nearly as much as traditional ad units placed above the fold. But they can be an effective way to generate incremental ad revenue from visitors who would otherwise leave the site once they’ve finished consuming a piece of content.
Taboola offers a similar service for publishers willing to include links to external content on their sites.

4. Undertone

UndertoneWhat It Is: Undertone specializes in “high impact” ad units, which typically means the ad units that disrupt the user experience in order to get messaging in front of them. These can include so called “pop-up” ads that appear over the site’s natural content. While most visitors to a site may view them as annoying advertisements, the fact is that they’re very effective at drawing attention to the ad’s content. And that means that advertisers are willing to pay premium CPMs to get to these ad placements on highly targeted sites.
How to Use With AdSense: Undertone offers an ad implementation not available in AdSense, so it’s easy enough to use this network with AdSense. Think of Undertone as an exclusive provider of pop-up ads; it can be a nice supplement to the more traditional ads that are served once the pop-up is closed out.
It’s important to avoid overusing these ad units; while the money they generate can be very attractive, there is definitely a trade-off in the user experience. (In other words, visitors to your site won’t like them, and it may deter them from engaging with your content.)

5. Google AdSense

What It Is: Most sites that rely primarily on AdSense to monetize display ad inventory only use a portion of the opportunities that are available to them. In addition to the three banner ads per page–such as leaderbaoards and rectangles–AdSense allows sites to include up to three link units per page. These link units, which consist of a set of linked keywords that direct to a landing page with targeted ads, take up very little space but can become a meaningful revenue source if implemented properly.

Google also offers a custom search engine product that can be used to help visitors search for specific content on your site. In addition to pages from your site, the results will feature text ads. Any revenue generated from those ads–which often have a very high click rate–are split between Google and the publisher site.
How to Use With AdSense: Text links and custom search boxes are designed specifically for use alongside traditional AdSense units. Because link units are text-only implementations, it makes sense to use those in text-heavy sections of your site. Search boxes can appear just about anywhere on the site; often they’re positioned in the top right of a page where visitors are conditioned to look for the search functionality.

Bottom Line

If you’re monetizing a site primarily via display advertising, odds are you have a lot more tools at your disposal than you may realize. While many focus their attention on pitting ad networks against one another to find the highest earner, time may be better spent figuring out how to get multiple networks to work best together. Using AdSense doesn’t preclude you from taking the best of what other ad networks have to offer and running those monetization techniques simultaneously.

Tracking your numbers (how many people view your site, click each ad, and make a purchase from that click) gives you the leverage to expand this part of your business, enabling you to continue building your online rep.

I began making money with the program when I only had 1,000 hits per month on my site. Amazon and Google are far from your only options for online advertising. Rakuten Linkshare is a great place to search for other affiliates for your ads. Through their program, you can get customized ad links, email links, and banner ads for Starbucks, Walmart, iTunes, and a slew of other popular brands. With this program, you can also find smaller companies, regional or specialized brands, and more. I run a combination of Google, Amazon, and Rakuten’s programs, and my monthly income is approximately $150 from these programs. It’s not a lot of money, but it’s also not a lot of work for residual (it means recurring…since the ads are permanent…) income.

6. Company Referral Programs

Speaking of the benefits of permanent ads, banners and links aren’t the only ways to earn a little bit of dough off your online endeavors. By having a website, you gain the power of emailing companies to ask them for things. I have no shame in letting the yoga company whose mat I’m looking into purchasing know that I have a blog and write for yoga publications – it sometimes gets me discounts.
Other times, I gain a valuable business contact in PR, advertising, or other aspects of corporate sales. Sometimes I just get a free drink. Either way, money in and of itself is worthless. Ditch the middle man and use the internet to barter what you have and can do for what you need.

If you have a social media account, try out Klout. The company tracks your social media usage, determines how big and what type of audience you draw based on the subject matter of your updates and posts. Using this information, you’re qualified to receive free items, tickets, etc. Check their website often to find ways of earning free stuff by doing what you’re already doing online…boring the rest of us…

If you have anything you want to sell, then EBay is the place you need to seriously consider doing it first. Personally I’m not a fan of the site because of the work it takes to build up a reputation. If you start getting too big for EBay or decide you want to try a different flavor, Amazon has a marketplace as well. I prefer using Amazon because I can depend on their shipping, have a Prime account, and trust their reviews (overall, not usually singularly, although occasionally that as well).
The difference between Amazon and EBay is that EBay (though still filled with new items) is seen as a used marketplace between individual parties, whereas Amazon (which is filled with offers for new and used merchandise from the 3rd parties) is viewed as a Wal-Mart-type superstore. As a consumer, this difference leads me to use Amazon, so it only makes sense to target on my own demographic.

If you’re crafty (and I mean that in more than one way, wink wink), you’ll enjoy Etsy. Handcrafted items are the bread and butter here. Plenty of people make decent side money on the site, which is basically an EBay for crafters and artists. Set up a sellers account with Etsy, and you’ll be asked to set up your virtual storefront and put up at least 5 goods for sale.
Once you have this down, you’ll be a budding Etsy entrepreneur. Provide great quality to your customers, and they’ll often return. Many people are willing to pay a premium for quality handmade designs. Etsy (like EBay and Amazon) takes a cut off the top for selling items through their site. PayPal takes another cut, and you have to be careful with taxes on all income, so be diligent while building your online business.

11. Craigslist

Craigslist is the modern equivalent of the classified ads that dominated the days of newspapers. These quick ads are easy to navigate and use, and they’re geographically linked. Whether you’re selling something or offering a service.
Posting ads on Craigslist is technically easy, but people often have fears about posting their personal information on the site. I communicate mostly through email when doing business on Craigslist, and I’ve never run into any issues. I’ve never been ripped off, nor have I been murdered or raped for using the site. It takes common sense, so use your best judgment, but don’t assume someone is a thief just because of their preferred communication method. Maybe what you need is a job. It doesn’t matter which job search site you prefer using (even Craigslist) – Indeed tracks them all, and then some. You can find jobs posted on company websites, through temp agencies, and more at Indeed. If money is something you really need, Indeed is most definitely the place you want to visit to browse career opportunities.

Where Indeed excels at finding job postings across the web and acting as a search crawler for employment, maybe a full-fledged career is too big of a commitment at this point in your life. Elance is a site to find freelance work of all types. I’ve used it for quick writing, editing, copywriting, resume building, and other odd jobs and temp gigs. The experience has been great.
Elance offers a wide array of technical, data entry, accounting, and other freelance and temp gigs. If you’re just looking for something short and sweet, log in, input and showcase your marketable skills, and begin searching through their job database, using any parameters you desire. Once you submit a bid, you’ll receive an acceptance or denial – you may get a few rejections, but don’t sweat it. Negotiate the terms of your bid, and get to work. You have money to make.

If you’ve heard of crowdsourcing (and even if you haven’t), Amazon’s Mechanical Turk program is a great place to get involved. Much like at Elance, you input your info and skills. You then are able to search for different menial tasks ranging from identifying inappropriate web content to transcribing audio recordings to basic data entry work.
Just like at any other job, the more work you do, and the better your quality, the more opportunities you’ll have to make money. The payouts are often small, and your payment is received in Amazon credit, but Mturk is a great place to make mindless money while veg’ing on the couch watching TV.

LinkedIn is a social media site for professionals. This isn’t a direct way to make money, but it’s a great way to connect to your current and potential peers, customers, clients, vendors, and more here. You’ll build a reputation and get in the loop on important developments in your chosen career path and/or industry. One day an old college buddy may hit you up for a dream job you never considered at the exact moment you are looking for a new vocation. Whether you like it or not, keeping your LinkedIn profile current is a great way to get surprised with new work opportunities out the blue.

If you’re an experienced nanny or babysitter, Care.com is the place you want to make money. By listing yourself on the Craigslist of Childcare, you’ll broaden your reach and increase your odds of finding the right gig at the right time. I support bootlegging – I don’t see it as being immoral or unethical in any way. I used to bootleg quite a bit in my youth, and I still do on occasion today (although not yet today in particular, I more meant “in the present”). Soon, you’ll have a dozen or so reviews under your belt and can hire yourself out as a Yelp! reviewer. 1.RevenueHits
Revenuehits admits that they are not as good as Adsense, but they believe they are better than other alternatives. It’s a Performance base Ad Network that helps publishers to generate more revenue. If you are going to use this network, I would suggest you to keep your ads running for 5-6 days to get best results.
Revenuehits offers Banner ads, Sliders, Pop unders, button etc. Minimum payout is $20.

2. Bidvertiser
Bidvertiser is a pay per click advertising site that could be a great Adsense alternative if you didn’t get Adsense approval or got banned. The way it works is little bit different from Adsense. While Adsense shows ads based on context or visitor’s interest, it creates a bidding system that allows highest bidder to advertise on your blog. Initially you won’t be able to earn much revenue as it takes some time to get your site found by Highest bidders. So stay longer.

Next Google Adsense alternative is Chitika. If you are tired of not getting Adsense approval, then sign up for Chitika. You need not to get approval for using chitika ads on your site. That means you can monetize your low traffic site with Chitika. Just create an account and put ads on your site.
It offers 3 types of ads – Search Targeted Ads, Local Ads and Mobile Ads. It’s PPC rates aren’t as good as Adsense.

6. Infolinks
Infolinks is a bit different from other advertising networks. Mainly because it shows ads differently. It doesn’t take too many spaces of your site to show ads. It shows in text ads or pop up ads. You can use it with Adsense safely.
Infolinks offer 4 types of ads – InFold, InText, InTag and InFrame. All of them are designed to overcome banner blindness. Minimum payment threshold of $50 for Paypal or $100 for Bank wire.

VigLink is totally different from other Ad networks. It converts normal links into affiliate links. If someone makes a purchase by using your link, you’ll earn commission out of it. Kontera is similar to Infolinks. Kontera Ads appear on hyper linked text when you hover the mouse on the linked text. It also offers image and video ads. All ads are based on pay per click payment.
Whenever you add in text ads on your site, make sure that you are not annoying your readers with too much ads.

My advice is not to try the networks at a time. You can do A/B testing to check which one works better for you. However, you can use 2-3 networks at a time.
